Guru Padmasambhava iscommonly known as GuruRinpoche, translating to “Precious Master.” Guru Rinpoche is regarded as afully enlightened and awakened being, essentially a Buddha. Unlike a gradualpath to enlightenment or practicing the teachingsof Buddha Shakyamuni to attain enlightenment over time, Guru Rinpoche isbelieved to have incarnated as a fully enlightened being from the start. In hisform, he is holding a five-pointed vajra in his right hand, it represents thefive Buddhas of the cosmic directions and the five kayas of the anuttarayogatantra. On his other hand he is holding Kapala (skullcup) which represents thetransformation of delusion into perfect wisdom, the skull also symbolizes greatbliss and a symbol of impermanence.
He is also holding aKhatcanga (tantric staff) which is a ritual instrument held in the crook of theleft arm. Below him there were the seven-jewel insignia or seven primarypossessions of Chakravartin: a pair of elephant tusks, a unicorn/ rhinoceros’horn symbolizing the precious horse, the round golden earring of preciousQueen, the square golden earring of precious minister, a branch of coral andeight-faceted flaming jewels in pyramid formation of six visible.
